Two brothers, one brand of metal furniture and accessories for everyday space.

O nás

A short intro and a series of questions that will reveal our universe to you.

Through modern technology, rounded shapes, powder colours and functional design we are changing the way we look at the use of metal in interiors. We founded Space of Space in 2020 and design and produce all our products in the Czech Republic. Jakub is an architect, Martin is an economist therefore the brand reflects the creativity, enthusiasm and strategic and systematic approach that are natural to them.

Would you like to fly to space?

Jakub: I feel like I’m flying to space constantly.

Of course, it’s not a random question. Astro, Pluto, Luna… Not even NASA should be ashmed for the namesake of Space of Space products. What do metal products from the Czech Republic have to do with the infinity above our heads?

Martin: Allegedly they came to our planet to make it a nicer place. We are just helping them. Now seriously… There are several connections. First of all the wordplay, “space – a space where you live” and “space – the universe”. Our signature shape is the bend and the actual rounded shapes of the products, which can resemble the roundness of the planets. And then there’s the apparent simplicity of the universe, behind which is actually the absolute complexity of everything. Thus it is with our products. At first glance a very simple and clean design, yet the reality and the actual production is quite complex because we use non-standard production processes to ensure maximum quality and durability.

Who convinced who to start your own brand?

M: I think it came at the same time from both of us. As long as I can remember, I was into entrepreneurship, business, strategy. I knew it was the direction I was headed to.

J: I felt very similarly. After a couple years of experience working in my field (architecture), I knew that the only direction for me would be working independetly. Even while studying, Martin and I talked about starting our own company. Not in any specific details at the time, but discussions like “put something on paper” were frequent.

M: I just teased him. To draw something that we would try to produce and to start selling. There were a lot of ideas, but in the end it came together at the right time. Jakub wanted to design and not be limited by the boundaries you have when you work for someone else. And we went for it and now here we are.

J: At the same time, it must be mentioned that we grew up in an environment where business was being built. No doubt it left us with a certain amount of independence and also the urge to create something of our own. Thanks to our parents, we know that even two people can achieve big goals.

What do you admire most about the other one? Which of his characteristic influences the running of Space of Space?

J: Natural intelligence. And the ability to count, because I’m really bad at that. To this day, I have trouble converting from mm to cm.

M: But you have imagination. That’s a gift. You think of a design and you see it instantly, you can visualise it. Which of course has a major influence on the running of Space of Space. We’re one of the few brands that has a full in-house design and doesn’t hire designers. I’m proud of that.

J: I’m proud of your strategic and business-oriented thinking, because without that we wouldn’t have gotten anywhere.

Kiss, marry, kill. You know it? What would it look like if you had to decide between your products?

M: Haha, I would say kiss and marry I can think of two products and it’s pretty even. It’s the Naos 08 menu holder and the Bolid stool. There’s a long time development behind them and paradoxically that’s why I like them all the more. They’re sophisticated, perfectionistically made and interesting products that get attention everywhere.

J: That’s like asking what your favourite child is. You can’t pick a favorite product because one wouldn’t exist without the other. New products are created amongst others, and often that’s the only context I have to work with. Also most of the time when I design I don’t think of a single product. It starts to pile up, and something that was supposed to be a serving tray becomes a tray and…

One word that you think best describes the character of the products?

M: Functional!

J: I’ll try two. Functionality and aesthetics. Functionality is always the main aspect of a product, aesthetics is something that gives it the juice. Like the music in a movie.

O nás

I can have Space of Space in my house, but currently your universe revolves mainly around gastronomy. How did that happen?

J: The natural evolution of the universe. At the end of 2021 we were contacted by Kro Coffee to see if we would like to design serving trays for them. I confess I considered it for a long time. We had been in the business for less than ten months at that point and I wanted to design large pieces of furniture. But my mind changed eventually. From the two tray sizes that are still used at the café in Vinohrady neighborhood today, a series of five sizes in five colours was created. We could say that the gastronomy chose us.

M: I would just add that we enjoy both markets and even though it may not seem like it at first glance, they are very connected. What is important is that people interact with our products and enjoy their company. It doesn’t matter if it’s at home or in a café.

A dream business where you would like to see your products one day?

M: I don’t have a specific business, but rather dream locations. Perhaps Paris where we already are, that came true for me. Next I would definitely like to see them in Dubai or in New York.

J: Every business or project that we’re a part of is my dream to come true. Because it always brings our products into everyday interaction with people. And that for me is an indescribable feeling of satisfaction and joy.

And the most difficult question at the end: film or architecture?

M: Architecture in film! Ideally in the company of Space of Space products, perhaps at the Edison Cinema in Prague.

J: For me they are connected universes, where one borrows from the other. I’m fascinated when architecture – a particular place or location – becomes one of the characters in a film. Like Piero Portaluppi’s Villa Necchi Campiglio in Milan, where Luca Guadagnino I Am Love movie is set. Film is one of the most authentic ways to capture architecture and the emotions associated with it.
